High Ground Design Summary:
High Ground Design is a landscape architecture firm in Charleston, South Carolina that creates more than just visual appeal in a city where you must build on high ground.
The Problem:
This was a new company and needed everything from branding to a website to business cards and yard signs.
The Solution:
While brainstorming names we looked at the rich history, and well-preserved architecture that is ever-present in Charleston. Named “the most hospitable city in America” we wanted to make sure that the name, as well as the visuals, were inviting and modern and harkened back to the weather.
The ocean is not only the reason you must build on high ground, but it also provides work, food, and fun in this humid subtropical climate. The city almost revolves around those elements that provide such architectural challenges.
Charleston is also known as “The Holy City'' and “High Ground” is a slight nod to its religious history. The church steeples are very prominent, not only from within the city but are also highly visible you’re on the water due to the low-rise cityscape.
Lastly, the Palmetto tree is a very popular symbol and is seen on nearly every car, retail shop, and restaurant in the area and the pride that exists for SC is palpable. We wanted to use the kinetic energy captured on the top of the Palmetto tree icon within the design to create a notion of nostalgia and familiarity.
